Understand hard topics in plain English

Stuck on something confusing? AI can explain anything at exactly your level — and check you really got it.

The short answer

Ask the AI to explain the topic simply, then build up step by step, then test your understanding. Tell it your level and ask it to check you actually got it — nodding along is not the same as understanding.

The fastest way to understand something hard is a patient teacher who adjusts to exactly where you are and never makes you feel stupid for asking. That is precisely what AI can be, on demand, for free. The whole skill is asking well: state your starting level, ask for an analogy, and — the part people forget — have it test you, because anything you cannot explain back you do not yet understand.

This turns "I sort of get it" into real, durable understanding, one honest layer at a time.

Start simple

Tell it to assume you know nothing and build from there. The goal of the first pass is not to be impressive — it is to be clear.

  1. 1Name the topic and your current level honestly.
  2. 2Ask for the simplest possible explanation.
  3. 3Ask for an everyday analogy.
  4. 4Have it ask you one question back to check you got it.

Copy-paste prompts

promptExplain [topic] like I’m completely new to it — simple words, short sentences, and one everyday analogy.
promptI sort of understand [topic] but [specific bit] confuses me. Explain just that part, simply.
promptNow ask me one question to check I actually understood, then tell me if I’m right.
promptGive me a one-sentence version, then a one-paragraph version, of [topic].

Build it up

Layer the complexity gradually, checking understanding at each step. Going one level at a time, and seeing how the pieces connect, is how you build a real mental model instead of memorised words.

  1. 1Once the basics click, ask for the next layer.
  2. 2Ask how the pieces connect to each other.
  3. 3Have it test you between layers.
  4. 4Slow right down the moment it stops making sense.

Copy-paste prompts

promptGood, I’ve got the basics of [topic]. Add the next layer of detail, then check I followed.
promptHow does [concept A] connect to [concept B]? Explain the link simply, with an example.
promptGive me a slightly harder example of [topic] and walk me through it step by step.
promptWhat’s a common misconception about [topic], and what’s the truth?

Teach it back

The real test of understanding is explaining it yourself and letting the AI catch the gaps — the “teach it to learn it” trick. If you can explain it cleanly to a curious child, you own it.

  1. 1Explain the topic back in your own words.
  2. 2Ask the AI to find the gaps or errors.
  3. 3Fix them, then explain it again.
  4. 4Repeat until your explanation is clean.

Copy-paste prompts

promptI’ll explain [topic] in my own words — point out anything wrong or missing, then let me try again: [your explanation]
promptPretend you’re a curious 10-year-old and keep asking “but why?” about [topic] until I really understand it.
promptGive me a tricky question on [topic] that would catch someone who only half understands it.
promptRate my understanding of [topic] out of 10 based on my explanation, and tell me the one thing to shore up.
💡 If a topic is high-stakes (medical, legal, safety, financial), use AI to build understanding but confirm the specifics with a trusted source or a qualified person — a clear, confident explanation can still contain a wrong detail.
